"Noah Lukeman, one of the top literary agents in New York, gave writers a great gift."
--James Frey (regarding The Plot Thickens)
"This will certainly help writers of any kind defeat rejection and possibly score."
--Writers.com (regarding The First Five Pages)
Many books have been written about how to get published. But few have been written by literary agents, who receive thousands of submissions each year and who grapple with them on a daily basis. Even fewer have been written by active literary agents who are willing to write from the trenches and offer their perspective on why they reject manuscripts, and why they accept them. And no books have been written from an agent's perspective on what it's like, step by step, to work with an agent on a daily basis, and on how to assure that you maintain a long, happy working relationship with your agent.
How to Land (and Keep) a Literary Agent is the first book written from an active literary agent's perspective that teaches authors why agents reject or accept manuscripts; why they decide to represent certain authors and not represent others; the best way to approach agents; the best way to work with an agent on a daily basis; and that offers them dozens of specific resources to make the difference in their finally finding the perfect agents for their work.
New York literary agent Noah Lukeman, President of Lukeman Literary Management Ltd, has represented multiple New York Times bestsellers, winners of the Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award, National Book Award Finalists, and has himself written three critically-acclaimed books on the craft of writing, The First Five Pages, The Plot Thickens, and A Dash of Style. During his last 13 years as a literary agent he has read thousands of manuscripts and represented hundreds of book deals, and in this book he shares his insider's perspective, offers insight and practical tips about what works and what doesn’t.
How to Land (and Keep) a Literary Agent is a must-read for any author serious about getting published. Geared for a broad range of authors, its subject matter is relevant to authors of fiction and non-fiction, screenwriters, poets--any serious author--offering principles that will help lead to success no matter what your craft. Practical and engaging, filled with exercises, anecdotes and sidebars, this 200 plus page book takes you on a journey, and will bring you that much closer to finally landing a literary agent.

How to Land and Keep a Literary Agent edition by Noah Lukeman Reference eBooks
I have read countless books on this subject. This book is the best of them all. I don't know how I missed this one over the past six years or so. It never came to my attention. Because Mr. Lukeman was thoughtful enough to make it available free, I gave it a chance. His suggestions are practical and realistic. I intend to get back into the game of finding an agent for my novel. I gave up several years ago (fifty or so rejections). I simply did not understand the game. Now I realize all the mistakes I made. The only reason I did not give this book five stars is that it has several grammatical errors. If this book were updated, re-edited, repackaged and rereleased, it would sell very well. It is not that it is dated, it's just that it was written in 2009. I hesitate to make these suggestions because I do not want to sound critical. (Actually what I would like to see this book available in its best form because it can be a great help to many people who struggle to understand the agent/book publishing process.)
I honestly do not know of any important subject that Mr. Lukeman left out.
Thank you for your help, Mr. Lukeman. I am now going to read your book, How to Write a Great Query Letter. I look forward to learning the correct way to write a query letter (after having written so many of them the wrong way despite the fact that I read countless books on how to write them!).
Please continue to help people with your "how-to" writing. You have a gift for writing to others instructively and constructively---in such a way as to help them understand processes that are not easily grasped. There are not many people who can do that.

How to Land and Keep a Literary Agent edition by Noah Lukeman Reference eBooks Reviews
After spending the last month pounding the internet for information on how to find an agent I stumbled across this book. In one afternoon I learned more than the previous thirty and I now feel I have a clear idea of the tools, method, and goal. Concisely written so it doesn't waste any time getting down to the essentials. I highly recommend this if you've never done an agent search before.
This is a rare exception to the "you get what you pay for" mantra. This free ebook was every bit as good as many of the paid books I've been reading on the subject; perhaps even better.
Getting an agent is hard work and lots of rejections. Definitely a good roadmap to getting one. But, I think, luck is also a huge factor in getting an agent. Great books have gotten tons of rejections so luck is a factor. I wish I had an agent, but self-publishing is my way right now. Hopefully, I'll get lucky in the future.
This is a rare and useful guide through the author-agent-publishing labyrinth. What I appreciate most about it is its practicality. The author puts numbers to things that others might hesitate to how many agents to approach; how much response time to allot them; how long the process will take from deal to publication, etc. It also offers a brass-tacks perspective on an industry that is often mystifying, seen through the gauzy haze of our emotions and writerly aspirations.
As the author says, "writing is an art; publishing is most definitely a business." This book offers valuable insights on navigating that business successfully.
I really enjoyed this book. After a long time of trying to get published you probably will be familiar with much of what this author has to say in the beginning. However, as you get into other sections you are guaranteed to learn new things and see areas where you should improve your strategy. In terms of building a platform and actually dealing with a literary agent this was a helpful book. I feel so much better about the process and the length of time it truly takes to get published in today's world. Good read.
Awesome presentation of important material. I was a total novice when I picked it up. I came away with good working knowledge of how to proceed - and succeed. I deeply appreciate this download.
Very helpful little book. It almost made me think I could find an agent. It was like a little ray of hope before I sent the beloved fruit of my imagination into the harsh agent query world, and I was snapped back to the reality that I apparently have nothing anyone wants to hear. But for the brief time I was reading this book, I thought there might be a kindly agent out there who I could snag.
